Memoirs of a Geisha by Arthur Golden is a heart-wrenching tale of love loss, and tragedy. It is about a girl named Chiyo who grew up in the tiny fishing village of Yoroido. One day, when she was seven, she meets Mr. Tanaka and her life changes forever. Chiyo and her older sister Satsu are brought to Kyoto, and a few months later she and her sister attempt to run away. Chiyo fails in her attempt to run away and gets beaten, however her sister manages to escape and go back to their home only to run away again with her boyfriend. About 5 years later chiyo meets the Chairman while weeping over the loss of her family back home and for the years ahead of her. The Chairman shows Chiyo nothing but kindness and made such an impact on Chiyo that she longed for him for the rest of her childhood years. After Mameha takes Chiyo on as her younger sister, the two must work together to overthrow Hatsumomo and get her thrown out of Gion for good.
" Soon I felt myself coming to a point where no human voice could reach me-until I heard a man's voice say this: why, its too pretty a day to be so unhappy. Ordinarily a man on the streets on Gion wouldn't notice a girl like me, particularly while I was making a fool of myself by crying.....Yet not only had this man bothered to speak to me he'd actually spoken kindly."
